Kreutzpointner to help build Europe's biggest solar farm

An area equivalent to 700 football pitches – 650 MWp – the biggest order ever placed with Kreutzpointner energy

Leipzig/Gangkofen/Burghausen. The Kreutzpointner Group is expanding its commitment to regenerative energy with Kreutzpointner energy GmbH. Kreutzpointner is currently involved in the construction of the Witznitz solar farm near Leipzig. At an impressive 503 hectares, the farm is as big as 700 football pitches which will make it the largest in Europe once complete with 650 MWp.

The participation in the construction of the mega solar farm on the site of a former open-pit lignite mine marks the biggest individual project in the seven-year company history of Kreutzpointner energy. The order placed by the solar farm operator MOVEON Energy in the mid-single-digit millions runs from August 2022 until next year and requires a large team of specialists from Kreutzpointner energy led by project manager Ludwig Blenninger who is also the technical director at Kreutzpointner energy. An average of 25 employees will be hired to work on the site for around ten months with support from subcontractors. Excavating around 150 kilometres of cable trenches to lay, install and connect the power cable systems is a huge task: ‘We need to dig 35,000 cubic metres of cable trenches and lay 65 kilometres of medium-voltage cable systems,’ explains Blenninger. The 250 kilometres of control lines will also be routed in the ground by the Kreutzpointner team along with the installation and connection of around 210 substations and 3,600 inverters.

The complete range of Kreutzpointner energy machinery will be used at the solar farm construction site in Witznitz. According to Blenninger, ‘we are faced with the particular challenge that we are also simultaneously building complete systems for our regular customers with approximately 200 MWp so we will constantly need to transport our machinery across half of Europe.’

Kreutzpointner relies on major contracts in Germany and neighbouring countries from its headquarters in Gangkofen in the Rottal-Inn district. The company is part of the Kreutzpointner Group (approx. 1,200 employees, EUR 110m in sales) and was founded in 2015 to manage large-scale projects in the field of renewable energies. Together with Fritz Kreutzpointner, Walter Bauer is responsible for managing Kreutzpointner energy GmbH and stresses the following: ’Any company capable of managing the size of the Witznitz solar farm will continue to receive orders of this size in the future – there is a clear trend towards renewable energies for these major projects.’

‘We believe that the renewable energy segment is growing in importance due to the required CO² savings which we hope will lead to further growth opportunities for Kreutzpointner energy and the entire group' says Fritz Kreutzpointner in his capacity as managing partner of the Kreutzpointner Group. In order to facilitate this, the company plans to double its permanent workforce and expand its partnerships with subcontractors. It also aims to increasingly tap into trade and technical synergies in the key Kreutzpointner business divisions Building Technology and Industrial Engineering (around 400 employees each) along with the Saxon sister company AEK GmbH (around 130 employees).
