Clariant AG cellulose–ethanol demonstration plant in Straubing

Project description

In July 2012, the Swiss speciality chemicals group Clariant inaugurated Germany’s largest cellulose–ethanol plant in Straubing/Bavaria. The company will produce up to 1,000 tonnes of cellulose ethanol per year from wheat straw at the approximately €28 million demonstration plant, which was initiated by Süd-Chemie AG, now part of the Clariant group. The plant is a major step towards the production of second-generation bioethanol on an industrial scale. A team from Kreutzpointner’s Industrial Engineering division completed the entire electrical installation work for the 2,500 m2 demonstration plant, in just ten weeks.

A study by Clariant shows the future potential of biofuels: with around 22 millions tonnes of straw that could be used for energy production without compromising soil regeneration, biofuels could cover 25 percent of Germany’s petrol requirements.
